Honestly speaking, I did not find this book interesting so far. Since I only read the book halfway, I cannot say this book is boring or is not worth reading. However, the information about farming the author gave us did not appeal to me.
I believe that one of the reasons I do not like this book is because I have a bitter experience of living with farmers. When I was a sophomore in high school, I went to study in Australia for 10 months as an exchange student. I lived with my host family who owns a farm in the country side of New South Wales. Their farm is not as huge as most farms in the neighborhood, but they have a variety of animals including cows, sheep, horses, alpaca, and goats.
I often helped them at their farm. Feeding animals, moving them one side to the other at the farm, shaving furs of sheep, brushing horses—there were endless tasks to do. I was overwhelmed by the workload. I could not imagine that I have to keep doing this every day until I get very old. This is why everytime the author said that he loves being a farmer in spite of challenges he faces, it made me think that I share a very different interest with him. He loves farming, but I do not.
By reading this, you may think I do not like animals and I do not have any appreciation for nature. I do love animals and I used to even want to become a farmer when I was a child. However, as I get older, I have changed like the author did. He used to love working as a owner of his restaurant and serve food with his customers, but later on, he chose to be a farmer which he loves to do the most. Although I had a longing for farming, experiences at Australia made me realize that I cannot commit myself to take care of animals at a farm. Instead, I prefer spending more convenient and comfortable life in an urban area.
As I continue reading this book, I hope that my opinion of this book would change.
